How to Size a Canoe Paddle
Learn how to properly size a canoe paddle by determining the correct shaft length for you, and why overall paddle length alone can be misleading.

One of the most common questions I get is, “What length canoe paddle do I need?”
The problem is that overall paddle length alone isn't a very good way to answer that question.
Different canoe paddle designs can have very different blade lengths. A long, narrow blade and a shorter, wider blade can both be properly sized for the same paddler—even though the overall lengths of the two paddles may be quite different.
What really matters is getting the shaft length right.
In the video below, I demonstrate the method I've used for years to size canoe paddles. I'll show you how to measure yourself, explain the difference between sizing a straight-shaft and bent-shaft paddle, and show why simply standing a paddle beside you and measuring it to your chin or nose isn't particularly useful.
These are general guidelines. Your canoe, paddling style and personal preference can all influence the final size, but this method will give you an excellent starting point.

The key is shaft length — not overall paddle length.
Once you determine the correct shaft length for your body and paddling style, the blade design determines the final overall length of the paddle.
