The Joe O' Rolling Stick is a compact rolling aid designed for paddlers who want to progress beyond rolling with a full-length Greenland paddle and begin developing the technique, body movement and confidence needed for reduced-paddle and hand rolls.

Inspired by the traditional Greenland norsaq, the Rolling Stick provides significantly less leverage and support than a full paddle while still giving the paddler something substantial to work with. That makes it an excellent intermediate step for practicing Greenland-style rolls, balance braces and other traditional skills.

I originally began making Rolling Sticks years ago after Greenland rolling instructor Helen Wilson encouraged me to develop and offer them. I wasn't convinced there would be much demand.

Helen was right.

I went on to make and sell well over 100 Rolling Sticks before eventually taking them out of regular production. After several years away, the Joe O' Rolling Stick is back.

Each Rolling Stick is individually handcrafted in my Thunder Bay workshop from carefully selected Western Red Cedar, with contrasting laminated wood accents. Every one is shaped and finished by hand, so grain, colour and lamination patterns will naturally vary from piece to piece.

At approximately 19 inches long, they're small enough to easily travel with your kayaking gear and tough enough to spend their life doing what they're intended to do—in the water.
